In July 2010 I started talking about painting my hutch and last week I showed you proof that I was finally doing it. You can see those posts here and here.
My baskets arrived by UPS yesterday, but I ran out of daylight for pics. So today I finally get to reveal my hutch transformation.
I am so glad I looked past my fears and went for it. I think it looks amazing. My only concern is that it makes the rest of the kitchen cabinets scream for a makeover.
Are you ready to see it? Good, because I am sooooo ready to show you.
Don’t you just love those baskets? I think they are the icing on the cake. I bought them at Target, however, they didn’t have enough so I had to order some online. They were cheaper online because you get a discount the more you order. The baskets fit perfectly and the color is just right.
They were already lined! What a bonus. I think the lining helps lighten up the black hutch and it goes with the dishes.
How about some before and after shots?

It was suggested by a reader that I remove the scrolly trim. I have no carpenter skills and the trim is such a part of the hutch that I would have to rebuild most of it. So it stayed and I think it looks just fine.
And a few more just because photos.
Oops a “moon” shot. ![]()
I might have some new plans for those red barstools. Not sure yet.
The little pig cutting board was made by my 81 yr old father in law when he was young. It makes me smile.
I have another large painting project on my list for this year and I can’t wait until I have that one checked off my list too.
Do you have any painting projects you have been putting on hold? Are you ready to take the plunge? I hope my built in hutch inspires you to get painting.

This turned out wonderfully...such a fabulous transformation! Great job!
ReplyDeleteYour hutch looks amazing!! I have a hutch to paint when the weather warms up. I'm still trying to decide on color. I'm torn between painting it red or black. Thanks for sharing all the steps you went through. I just have two questions: Did you use a sponge roller or a brush? And was waxing difficult? Is it a wipe on/wipe off process or do you put it on and leave it.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
It is awesome!
ReplyDeleteMany Blessings,
Melissa
Love the transformation! I can't believe that it is the same piece. And the Pig cutting board is fantastic! I just love it :)

The French Hutch
Wow... it is gorgeous! Beautiful job. The baskets are just perfect. Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful transformation!! It looks so custom and so rich, I would have thought it had been like that from the beginning. The baskets are a great contrast to the black too - really helps to balance it out and keep it from looking dark. Quite the contrary - it's black, but still so bright and cheery!
ReplyDeleteHow gorgeous! And it's huge! I love that!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Just gorgeous! Great transformation!
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing, and rather large project! You really put some time and effort into it, and the results were worth it! Well done, so stunning, love the baskets too. I have the honor of being your "linky neighbor" over at SNS party, have a wonderful weekend, tami
ReplyDeleteIt's stunning! LOVE the black paint with the wood top. Your hutch is going in the PoPP Spotlight. Thanks for sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteWow, it doesn't even look like the same piece of furniture! Really beautiful, Tracy! Love how the baskets marry the topper.
ReplyDeleteDonna
Wow! What a transformation! It doesn't even look like the same cabinet. Great Work!
ReplyDeleteAmazing transformation
ReplyDeleteVisiting from FJI. Your makeover looks like it came stright from Pottery Barn. You should feel proud! Magnificent job!
ReplyDeleteYou are giving me the courage to go after my childhood dressers. You did an amazing job - and I love your pears and artichokes!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful change!!! You did a great job on it and the baskets are just perfect! Best, Vicki
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this so much! You really saw the potential in this piece- I think I would have been seriously put off by those doors. Without them it doesn't even look like the same piece! BTW, I LOVE the scrolly trim!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is gorgeous,I love it!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see maybe three strands of jute wrapped around liner with a paper bag tag or office tag. Just a little something to breakup the liner and label what is in each basket, ie. napkins, placements etc.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I love the SIZE of your hutch. What an impressive piece! Second, I think the paint job looks fantastic. I really like the idea of paint and finished wood in the same piece. I have been giving serious thought to painting my hutch which belonged to my parents. It still has a beautiful finish but it needs "something"! I am inspired!!
ReplyDeleteHoly Moley! That hutch is HUGE and what a HUGE job to refinish it! It looks absolutely amazing and well worth the effort to overcome your fear. Congratulations :)
ReplyDeleteLove it - amazing what a difference that colour makes - completely modernises the piece! x
ReplyDeleteWow ! The hutch looks amazing , now that it is black the scrolly stuff doesn't show as much. If you do the rest of your cabinets you should do them a different color so that hutch will still stand out as a focal point. Great job !
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to update your hutch.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I just love that!
ReplyDeleteI noticed the picture on your sidebar and had to come for another visit to see your hutch. It is INCREDIBLE! So rich looking... hugs ~lynne~
