High School Reunion Door Prize

Our high school class of 1988 is having a 22nd reunion.  I know you are wondering why anyone would have a 22nd reunion.  They all know that the number 2 is my favorite and decided a 22nd would be better than a 20th.  Not really.  We just never had a 20th.  We are joining the class of 90 and having a reunion next weekend.  I am going to make a few door prizes for the event.  I  made this one tonight.  It is a frame to hold a reunion photo.  Our colors were white and and orange.  I wanted to give it some whimsy and  resemble our colors, but white and orange just didn’t work for me so I added in black.  Black always works for me.

I used a stamp on the mat.

And added some whimsy to the top of the frame.

What do you think?  Trash it or take it to the reunion for someone to win?

Frugal Fabric Prices

I have been shopping for fabric for my bay window in my breakfast area.  I have looked both online and in stores.  I checked out some fabric swatches from JoAnn’s last weekend.  The retail price is listed below.

It was on sale last week when I visited the store  for 50% off and it was $22 if I went by the price on the fabric.  Today the website lists it for $39.99 and it is currently 40% off.  I am not sure why the sample has one price and online has a different price.  I think it is wise to always check the online price before you go and shop at the store so you can ask for the online price if it is less. 

Today I continued searching for fabric online and found this great online fabric store called buyfabrics.com.

is listed for $14.95. 

So I checked the price of another fabric.

is $17.95 at buyfabrics and it is regularly $39.99 at JoAnn’s but on sale for $23.99. 

I am not an expert and I am not endorsing buyfabrics.  I just wanted to share with you that if you do a little research then you might save money.  Even though buyfabric will charge shipping, I will not be charged tax.  I am not sure if JoAnns charges a shipping charge when they order specialty fabric or not.  I do know I will be charged tax (8.25% where I live).  I did the math and buyfabric was about $15 less for 3 yards if I bought the Ballad Bouquet fabric.  I hope all of this makes sense.  I feel like a math teacher right now. 

I would love to know if you have any other sites I should visit before I make my selection.  I am really excited to get started because I found a great blog that gave me inspiration for my window treatments.  I will share it with you when I get my project finished, but if you need it now, let me know.

Furniture Lotion

In June Miss Mustard Seed shared a tip she read on another blog about mixing  3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar to revive and clean old wood.  I tried it not long after I read about it on a chest in need of some moisture.  It works and it lasts.  You can read more about it if you click here to get to Miss Mustard Seed’s post.

Here is the before photo of the chest.

You can see the mixture in a measuring cup and the paper towels I used to apply it.   The measuring cup made it easy to get the proper ratio.  The chest was very dry especially on the front of it.

Here it is a month later.

I Finally Made a Chalkboard

I taped off the bottom of a metal tray that I already had and sprayed chalkboard paint on it.   I used regular chalk to condition it so that it had a used look and then I wrote Welcome with my new chalk markers that I posted about here.

I feel like I officially belong in blog world because I finally have a homemade chalkboard!

Earring Giveaway and a Tip

I have been trying to do one giveaway a month.  This time it is a pair of earrings that I made.  I dabble with jewelry making off and on.  I can get addicted to buying beads.

I like to make earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

I hate to admit that I watch the Bachelor/Bachelorette, but I do.   One of the girls on the show had a necklace that I loved.  She was the one whose husband died( I think in a plane crash) and I believe Jason surprised her by letting her visit her son on a beach.  Once again not sure if it was for her birthday or her son’s birthday.  Anyway, I tried to copy her necklace.  It was a multi colored and multi strand necklace with a large silver round pendant.

I wore my look alike necklace today and thought I would share some photos of it  I took the  photos of myself in the mirror so the “D” is backward.  I made the pendant with metal silver clay and stamped a “D” in it.  I had my son press his thumb into the clay to make a thumbprint.  The “D” is for David.  I don’t remember what the inspiration necklace had on the pendant.  Maybe nothing at all.  It was just big and silver. 

I like to put these hook clasps on the pendants so that they are removable and can be worn on different necklaces.

Here is my tip.  I found a product that seems to be helping me with my new age of 40.  The corner of my eyes seem dark and tired these days.  I don't like concealer because  it settles in my wrinkles and I am not big fan of base makeup.  I use a little bit of Bare Minerals powder for foundation.  I found this stuff at Ulta.  It seems to help and it doesn’t cake under my eyes, settle into wrinkles or feel heavy.   So what’ your beauty secret?
