Memorial Day

How did you spend your Memorial Day?  The beginning of ours was not good at all.  We were called at 3am by a fellow firefighter who made a call to my father in law’s house.  He was taken by ambulance to the hospital.  He will be there for a few days while they run some tests.  While my husband rested from his early morning trip to the hospital, my son and I went to our Texas Panhandle War Memorial to observe those that died for our country.  It is a really nice memorial.  I didn’t realize you can purchase plaques honoring veterans.  We are going to buy one in honor of my husband’s uncle.  He died from leukemia a couple of  years ago and he served in WWII.  I think it will make my husband’s aunt so happy when we show it to her.  I can’t wait!  Here are some photos of the memorial.

This is the are where the plaques that people can buy are displayed.

I am proud that my city has such a place to honor our veterans.  Thank you to all who served and especially to those that gave their life.

Memorial Day Flowers in an Egg Basket

011

Friday I drove past my house I sold 6 yrs ago and saw a garage sale.  I stopped and found a few items.  One was a wire egg basket that could collapse for 25 cents.  I was paying out and told the lady that I was the one that sold her the house.  She invited me inside to take a look!  I felt like I was on the show Property Ladder where you get to go back and see your old house.  She isn’t much of a homeowner she admitted.  I have noticed for over 2 years her garage is shoe polished with the words “Honk I am 40”  My son and I thought about changing the number every year so at least it was current.  Well she is selling the house and moving to Australia.  Since she was putting it on the market, she was making lots of changes inside.  It looked good and I was glad.  So back to the egg basket.

I thought it would make a great planter so I gathered some supplies and flowers.

003

I painted the basket black and lined it with moss.  I added soil and the flowers.   I chose red, white and blue flowers to honor the color of our flag and those that have fought and died  for our country.

Here is the finished project.  It can hang or sit.

I also bought this neat stand at the garage sale for about 50 cents for both of them.

Vintage and Red

005

What is vintage, red and oh so cute?  Why my VW Karmann Ghia of course.

I bought this online in Sept 2009.  It was delivered on a truck from Oceanside, CA.

kg2.bmp

I have a 2001 SUV.  My every day car is unimportant to me.  It needs to start and get me where I need to be.  That’s it.  But I have always wanted a Karmann Ghia since the day I watched Molly Ringwald in the movie, Pretty in Pink.  The year was 1986.  The same year I turned 16 and got my driver’s license.  Please tell me you are all old enough to remember the movie.  Hers is a 58 model in the movie.  My favorite is a 69 model. Twenty three years of waiting,  I ended up with a 73.   Some of them are convertible.  I didn’t want the extra expense or trouble of a convertible.  Karmann Ghias were produced from 1955 to 1974.

Here is the Ghia in the movie.

1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe [Typ 14]

Aren’t they adorable???

So careful cautious me took the plunge and bought one sight unseen.  I sent money to a stranger and crossed my fingers a car would show up at my house.  Everything about it was as described except the paint job.  It had runs, chips, dings, etc.   From 40 ft away you couldn’t tell so the photo of the car on the truck looks good.

I am sure this would bother many of you as much as it bothered me.  I just couldn’t see past it.  I asked my friend who paints cars as a side job if he could paint it for a reasonable price.  He agreed.  Lucky for me I have helped him out when needed so he returned the favor.  Restoring old cars is not cheap.

I am mad at myself for not getting before pics of the problem areas.  My friend said the old paint could be removed with a razor blade and then pulled off in strips.  Not good.

Of course all things cute need accessories.  She needed new seals,  bumpers, Karmann Ghia script for the back and tail lights.

Instead of browsing here for accessories.

I was buying here.

Because I needed all this stuff.

So my car could look like this.

002

See the little curved back window?  Not easy to install.  I had to find a specialist to do it.  It cost a lot and it can’t always be done.  There is only one guy in town who could do it.

003

005

You can see my boring everyday mommy car in the background.

006

007

008

It is only a 2 seater.

010

Very basic dashboard.  No power steering either.

011

If you are cold and need heat then  you have to let the motor heat warm your car by pulling up these levers.  No thanks.  I will only drive her when it is nice out.

012

See the trigger?  You have to pull it up to get into reverse.

013

Although I couldn’t do the physical work on this project, I did have a lot of leg work to do in order make her pretty.

Well I am off to my first car show.  My husband is entering his car too.    I will show you his car another time.  It has bells and whistles because he is spoiled like that.

Thanks For The Award.

Several wonderful bloggers thought I was worthy of an award.

It was given to me by:

Melissa @ Those Northern Skies

Jessica @ Me and My Bucket

Sharon @ Keen Inspirations

Nikki @ Nikki’s Nifty Knacks

Veronica @ Veronica’sKorner

Anita @ Going a Little Costal

Did I miss anyone?  If so please let me know so I can thank you.

Why did I get awarded this by so many people?  Because I have been bad and didn’t respond as soon as I was awarded this the first time so the others didn’t know I had received it already.    But how awesome is it that so many great women thought of me and what a great ego boost.   Ok I am gonna be bad again.  I just can’t pick 15 bloggers.  Every time I get on the computer I discover new and great talent.  I have been mentally trying to pick and my mind just said nope.  Too many.  I will play the other part of the award game which is to list 7 things about me.

1.  I can’t close my eyes in the shower.  I have seen way too many scary movies.

2. I love the water but I am afraid of being in water and not being able to see the fish.  I want to KNOW if Jaws is gonna eat me.

3.  I want a donkey.  I have always wanted a donkey and one day when we live on our farm I will have one.

4.  I have also always wanted a Karmann Ghia.  I got one in September.  If you don’t know what it is I will be doing a post on it very soon.  It was just painted and I am supposed to get it tomorrow.

5.  My mom was shot in the abdomen when she was pregnant with me.  We both lived.  I know…shocking huh?  Bet I can shock you even more.  My dad shot her.

6. I had long term relationships before I married.  One was for almost 6 yrs and another for 3 yrs.  I met my husband and was married within 4 months.  Crazy huh?

7.  I will be 40 in June.  My mom died at age 47.  I don’t mind turning 40, but I think it will be weird to turn older than my mom.

I truly am thankful that other bloggers think enough of me to give me an award.  I have so enjoyed this blogging world and all the great people that I have “met”.

Rolling Pin Holder Idea. Plate Holders Are Not Just for Plates.

My mom had a couple of old rolling pins I wanted to display.  I had an idea.   Why not use a plate holder?

007

Not so cute huh?  But wait!  What if I added this fake stained glass project that I made?

011

003

012

Better but not quite there.  How about adding this?
